Easy Flower Arrangement For The Holidays

While I love the way fresh cut flowers can brighten up a room, I’ve never done much more than trim the stems and throw the whole dang bunch in a vase of water. I assumed that anything more than that would be too time-consuming and tedious, but I was SO wrong!

Creating a gorgeous and easy flower arrangement, is something I’m confident ANYONE can do.

On a recent trip to Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, I learned how to create this simple holiday flower arrangement. The folks from Nature’s Flowers walked a group of us through the process, giving us tons of helpful tips along the way.

I just adore how my holiday-themed flower arrangement turned out! Using the red and green Twizzlers candy in the bottom is so unexpected and whimsical, which really makes for a fun and festive look.

The best thing about this method is that you can easily adapt it for arrangements to fit ANY occasion. Above you can see some of the other items that my fellow Walmart Moms used — apples, candy, fresh cranberries, citrus fruits… The possibilities are truly endless!

The real test was to see if I could recreate something similar at home, so I stopped by Walmart and picked up the items pictured above. Depending on what you already have at home, your out-of-pocket costs may just be limited to just the flowers and possibly the floral foam. Beautiful and frugal — love it!

Supplies you’ll need:

Speaking of floral foam, make sure that what you’re using is the wet floral foam, not to be confused with the foam used for faux flower arrangements. Wet floral foam is designed to absorb and hold the water, keeping your arrangement fresh and beautiful for an extended period of time.

How To Make A Holiday Floral Arrangement

To start, you’ll need to find a vase that’s on the taller side and a bowl that will fit snugly in the top. I found this vase at Walmart, and these Great Value Twist & Store containers fit perfectly in the top.

This is a one-time investment that can be used over and over again. But you may already own something that’s suitable, so shop your home first!

Now is when you can get creative and fill your vase up with whatever fits the theme of your get together. I filled my vase up with mini shatterproof Christmas ornaments, and then I placed my bowl inside the top of the vase.

Cut a piece of wet floral foam so that it’s about twice as tall as the bowl you’re using and soak it thoroughly with water. Then gently press the wet floral foam down inside the bowl.

Using floral shears, trim the bottom of each flower at a sharp angle as you go, and start sticking them randomly into the wet floral foam. The objective is to create a spherical look. Stepping back to asses your work from several angles will help you stay on track.

Since I used flowers that were a variety of sizes, I started with the largest flowers first and then moved on to the smaller flowers. Continue placing your flowers until you get the full look you want to achieve.

At this point, I wanted to fill in the bare spots with some fresh filler greenery. Unfortunately, my local store didn’t carry anything that was suitable. If you’d like more fullness and a filled look, you can use some cuttings from your bushes or even pay your local Christmas tree farm a visit for evergreen trimmings. Typically they will give these out for free!

How To Care For Your Flower Arrangement

With just a little daily attention, your beautiful flower arrangement can last for a week or more. A few tips for keeping it fresh longer:

  • Try to keep your arrangement in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight.
  • Check the floral foam daily to ensure that it’s still saturated, and add water as needed.
  • Remove wilted blooms, as necessary.

This simple Christmas floral centerpiece only took about 15 minutes to complete. While that’s longer and a little more involved than just tossing the flowers in a vase, it’s SO much prettier and more impressive for a special occasion!
