Burgers are an American Favorite. If You’re Doing the Whole30 Program, Do You Have to Give Them Up?

Are Burgers Allowed on Whole30? (1)

The Short Answer:

Yes! Burger Patties are allowed on the Whole30 program. Buns are not.

The Long Answer:

When I did Whole30, hamburger patties were a big part of my daily life. Burger patties are pure protein and fat, which are allowed on Whole30. Unfortunately, that’s where the allowance ends. Typical burger favorites like cheese, ketchup and even buns are strictly prohibited on this program.

One thing I liked to do was create some Whole30 Compliant mayo and mix it with a bit of garlic and some basil. This created a nice creamy spread that went very well with meat dishes like burger patties and steak. Mustard and hot sauce also work well on a plain patty.

What is Whole30?

The Whole30 Program is a short-term body reset lasting 30 days, which refocuses individuals on whole foods and forces them to really think about what they are eating.

On Whole30, participants have:

  • No added sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • No legumes
  • No dairy
  • No grains
  • No alcohol

The goal of Whole30 is not weight loss, (though substantial weight loss might still occur) so I am loathe to refer to it as a “diet.” Instead, Whole30 is a lifestyle shift that encourages healthy eating practices.
