This Baked Bacon Cheese Onion Dip Recipe made with crispy bacon, gooey Gruyere, and caramelized onions is sure to please a crowd at any party or gathering.

Years ago I remember discovering one of the southern favorite appetizers, baked Vidalia Onion Dip. My aunt first shared it with me and all of a sudden it was as if there were no other appetizer worthy to take to a party. I wore out the party scene with Vidalia Onion Dip. Vidalia Onion Dip made an appearance at cookouts, birthday parties, bridal showers, tailgating, and Super Bowl parties. If it was a get-together, the Vidalia Onion Dip was always there. My plus one of sorts.

Since those days I’ve managed to quell my affair with the Vidalia Onion Dip and broaden my appetizer arsenal with other tasty offerings like easy Black Bean Dip, Spinach Artichoke Dip, loadedPulled Pork Nachos or Baked Brie. Yes, I was over my addiction to the Vidalia Onion Dip.

Or so I thought.

In walks Baked Bacon Cheese Onion Dip. Oh man. It’s like the basic tried and true Vidalia version, onlyjacked up a notch or three. Oooey, gooey cheese, mixed with caramelized onions and crispy bacon … oh my goodness! Yes, this will be my new party appetizergo-to.

Let’s be real. This is not diet food, y’all. But all things in moderation, right? Right. You could save a bit of calories by serving this dip with celery, cucumbers or other veggies which would also make this a super delectable low carb appetizer.

Baked Bacon Cheese Onion Dip can easily be made ahead by a day or so and then reheated right before party time. Get your dipping on and make some of this scrumptious drool-inducing Baked Bacon Cheese Onion Dip for your next gathering.

Wow. This sounds and looks SO good. This dip would be a good excuse to have a party!

Made this today…. It was good, no doubt about that. But VERY oily, like almost to the point where I didn’t want to eat it. Next time I will use cream cheese instead of the mayo, this was just kind of unappetizing with so much oil in the bottom of the pan. I would also suggest maybe some French bread with this! If you keep the original recipe it would help soak up some of the liquid.

    • Amy Johnson

What brand of mayo and cheese did you use? I know that some can be more oily than others.

People BEG me to bring this to parties. I add baby Bella mushrooms, though. Kicks it up a notch.

    • Dieselle

@NIC, Sounds like a great add, do you brown the mushrooms before adding them?

Would you believe, Amy, that this IS diet food according to Suzanne Somers?! It qualifies under proteins/fats. Her way of eating is called food combining and it’s about how your body digests the food. One would just need to use this dip with veggies instead of chips or some other carb. Anyway, I am looking forward to trying this!

Am I correct in that this recipe calls for only 3 ounces of gruyere cheese? That does not seem like much cheese. Will it ruin the recipe if more cheese is used? Thank you.

    • Amy Johnson

Yes, only 3 ounces. Of course you add more cheese to your preference.

Is it hard to dip with chips & the onions just being sliced, not chopped? What type of mayo do you use? It sounds great to take to a large gathering!
    Thanks
