Medical-surgical nursing is the largest nursing specialty in the United States and at LVHN. Medical-surgical nurses have advanced organizational, prioritization, assessment and communication skills and are leaders in coordinating care among the interprofessional health care team. Graduate nurses entering theMedical-Surgical Internship at LVHNwill receive specialty training related to medical-surgical nursing. This specialty internship includes interactive modules that focus on caring for today’s medical-surgical patient. Graduate nurses enjoy the exciting medical-surgical workshop that features engaging, expert guest speakers and interactive simulation. Guided by experienced nurse educators, graduate nurses work together in simulation scenarios that utilize high-fidelity mannequins, standardized patients and procedure-specific mannequins to navigate various challenging clinical scenarios. A game-based learning experience concludes the workshop. Nurses need to quickly navigate out of the medical-surgical patient room in this “escape room” game because the fastest team wins the prize!

Every second counts when stabilizing patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Graduate nurses entering theEmergency Department Internship at LVHNwill receive education related to their specialty of hire. A variety of learning methodologies are used to cater to every learning style. This specialty internship includes interactive lessons that focus on caring for today’s emergency patient. Graduate nurses enjoy exciting workshops that feature engaging, expert guest speakers and interactive simulations. Guided by experienced nurse educators, graduate nurses work together and individually in simulation scenarios that utilize high-fidelity mannequins, standardized patients and procedure-specific mannequins to navigate various challenging clinical scenarios. This internship is taught by qualified emergency nurses, flight nurses, critical care nurses, diabetes educators, trauma nurse experts, burn nurse experts, stroke clinical nurse specialists, respiratory therapists and other specialists. The emergency department internship prepares graduate nurses with the knowledge, critical thinking skills and hands-on training needed to provide high-quality, evidence-based interventions required for emergency nursing care.

Inpatient rehabilitation
Rehabilitation nurses work with patients soon after the onset of a disabling injury or chronic illness. They restore function so patients have freedom and independence again. Rehab nurses are collaborators, educators, care coordinators, advocates and change agents. They work with other caregivers to create comprehensive care plans based on patient goals and maximum potential.

Nurses in women’s and children’s specialties focus on the care of women throughout their pregnancy and childbirth, and the care of their newborn children up to age 18. Behavioral health
Behavioral health nurses assess and care for a person’s mental and behavioral health needs. Areas of specialty can include adolescent, adult and senior behavioral health nursing.
Lehigh Valley Hospital–Muhlenberg provides inpatient behavioral health servicesin theBehavioral Health Science Center. These programs provide short-term crisis stabilization for adults or adolescents (age 12-18) until they can safely receive care in an outpatient setting.

New graduate opportunities
LVHN offers newly licensed nurses the opportunity to complete ourANCC Accredited Nurse Residency Program. LVHN’s Nurse Residency Program is the first nurse residency program in Pennsylvania to receive “Accreditation with Distinction” from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Our 12-month program provides an opportunity to receive focused professional development and build on what was taught in school. LVHN’s nurse residency program addresses many challenges faced by newly licensed nurses when they enter their first professional experience. The program helps new nurses confidently transition from student to nurse, identifies and addresses gaps in clinical knowledge, enhances clinical decision-making and critical thinking skills, and fosters continuous professional growth and development.

When should I apply?
Graduate nurse opportunities are offered year-round, so it is never too late to apply at LVHN. You can apply as early as the end of your junior year or the beginning of your senior year. If you are graduating in May, you should submit your application by April. This allows time for you to complete the interview process for a position starting in June.
What should I include in my application?
You should include clinical experience and any additional experience relevant to the position you are seeking. For clinical experience, include the type(s) of rotation(s) and number of hours you have completed. In your personal summary, which should appear at the top of your resume, remember to include your goal for pursuing a nursing career with LVHN. If you would prefer to work at a specific LVHN hospital, include that in your personal summary as well.
