What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jinkies! This radical reworking of the beloved Mystery Team has plenty of attitude and style, but it doesn't have the first clue for how to turn its clever subversion into engaging fun.

Audience Member I really don't see the fascination behind changing the original design and story of established characters. Not just that but the humor was not funny. Why ruin something that's great? Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Gia M I only watched it because my roommate was watching it out of curiosity. I wish I could give it zero Stars because it is literally awful. It's not funny the characters are awful and aren't even the characters they're supposed to be. It's literally one of the worst things I've ever watched. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/24 Full Review Daniele T Achei a série ousada, divertida e contraventora. Uma perspectiva feminina ácida que aborda amplas questões e nos retoma a infância com uma pitada ardida (demais para alguns) de deboche. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review [ _ ] The show is tragic in so many ways with poor writing and bad intentions, it's hard to understand who they targeted it at with jokes being made about adults who watch animated shows as well as what feels like deliberate attempts just to seem edgy and constantly trying to subvert expectations. An animation done on youtube (Velma meets the original Velma) gave this show a better ending where in which Velma discovers that scooby is an eldritch like being constantly remaking the universe trying to perfect it. If this show had that level of dark twist maybe it could redeem it and make up for the abysmal show. I wouldn't recommend it, not even to hate watching it. Spend your time elsewhere and watch better animated shows if you need a fix. There are plenty targeted at adults that are artistically superior as well as written better. I hope this show isn't renewed and if it is I hope it's a full reboot with an actual attempt at a well written story, something more than the cringe narrative this season pushed. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Teddy B Aimless, repetitive, and mean-spirited whilst being under the thin, thin veil of 'scathing, modern satire'. Mindy Kaling's voicework also sounds annoyingly obnoxious and self-righteous, that might be a small argument in the end, but it really bugged me, nevertheless. Meaningless sarcasm drips unintelligibly and at concerningly high rates from this dread. The mystery at hand in this series doesn't feel slightly engaging when it is in the hands of this series' incredibly unlikeable and insufferable main character. The only series I can think of that shows a seething hatred and detestability for whatever audience it thinks it's trying to reach. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Aliyan B as rotten as it gets, and renewed for a second season.... what a joke Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Velma: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Heather Hogan Autostraddle Every episode is a cringy, eye-rolling slog that doesn’t seem to have any idea who its audience is, yet seems to despise them all the same. Jan 26, 2023 Full Review Velma: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Shirley Li The Atlantic Its edginess comes at the expense of its own characters and punishes the audience for being invested. Like a certain Mystery Inc. member rummaging around in the dark for her glasses, the series is unfocused, confused, and desperately lost. Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Velma: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The 25-minute episodes are a suitable delivery vehicle for the humour, but across a season it has a lot of work to do to function as a cohesive whole. Rated: 3/5 Jan 20, 2023 Full Review Velma: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Joe Reid Primetimer ...it's frustrating to watch the show nervously wink at its audience, assuring them that what they're watching is smarter than the IP-mining trend that birthed it. It would be a better series if it could just calm down. Aug 6, 2023 Full Review Velma: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice It’s an empty shell of a farce that’s not clever or engrossing. Just gross. How Kaling thought she could get away with a remake minus the sleuthing, silliness, ghouls and “meddling kids” that made it a joy really is a mystery.
