1 Choose the right plants
Plants are essential for adding color, texture, and life to your backyard, but you don't want to overcrowd your space with too many or too large varieties. Choose plants that suit your climate, soil, and sun exposure, and opt for dwarf or compact versions of your favorite flowers, shrubs, and trees. You can also use vertical gardening techniques, such as hanging baskets, trellises, or wall-mounted planters, to save floor space and create visual interest.

Just because you have a small space, doesn't mean you can't build layers for visual interest (and habitat).Columnar varieties of trees which have a small footprint but will grow tall. Straight and Narrow Syzygium and Slim Callistemon come to mind. Planter boxes are good, but green walls often look worse as time goes on (there's a lot of science behind these - just talk to the pros who do it well and your head will explode).Creepers on a trellis are good, just don't let them creep up into the gutter or root onto paint, etc.

In my experience, strategic planning from various perspectives significantly aids designers. One crucial aspect is the appropriate selection and arrangement of plants. Often, it’s beneficial to use odd numbers like 3, 5, or 7, which lend a sense of stability to the space. When arranging plants, it’s advisable to avoid placing similar-shaped plants adjacent to each other. Instead, a mix of round and tall plants creates a more appealing aesthetic. However, the designer’s job doesn’t end with just choosing the right plants. It’s also essential to harmonize their color tones. Utilizing a variety of greens can make the landscape appear larger and more inviting.

2 Create zones
Even if your backyard is small, you can still create different zones for different purposes, such as dining, lounging, playing, or working. You can use elements such as rugs, furniture, lighting, or screens to define and separate each zone, and make sure they flow well together. You can also use curves, angles, or levels to create the illusion of more space and depth.

3 Add a focal point
A focal point is a feature that draws the eye and creates a sense of direction and harmony in your landscape design. It can be anything from a fountain, a fire pit, a sculpture, or a colorful pot. Choose a focal point that reflects your personality and style, and place it strategically in your backyard, where it can be seen from different angles and distances. You can also use plants, rocks, or other elements to frame and accentuate your focal point.

A columnar tree is a good focal point. Ask your local nursery pro abiut what narrow but tall varieties they have in stock.Mirrors aren't necessarily a focal point (though they can be), but they can add more light to a shady garden when positioned well, and they make the space appear larger.

4 Use multipurpose furniture
Furniture is another important aspect of your landscape design, as it provides comfort and functionality to your outdoor space. However, you don't want to clutter your backyard with too many or too bulky pieces. Instead, look for furniture that can serve multiple purposes, such as benches with storage, tables with wheels, or chairs that can fold or stack. You can also use furniture that can double as planters, such as crates, barrels, or pallets.

5 Incorporate lighting
Lighting can make a big difference in the mood and ambiance of your backyard, especially at night. You can use lighting to highlight your focal point, create zones, or add some sparkle and charm. You can choose from various types of lighting, such as string lights, lanterns, candles, or solar lights, depending on your budget and preference. You can also use lighting to create contrast, drama, or warmth in your landscape design.

6 Be creative
The most important tip for maximizing your small backyard space is to be creative and have fun with your landscape design. You can use your imagination and personal taste to create a space that reflects your lifestyle and needs. You can also experiment with different colors, textures, patterns, and materials to add some flair and character to your backyard. You can also reuse or repurpose items you already have, such as old tires, bottles, or cans, to make some unique and eco-friendly decorations.

Using columnar trees is a great way to add layers without overtaking the whole landscape. And incorporating clean lines with hardscaping and well-maintained bed edges will keep the space looking very intentional and inviting. 🌿✨
