Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Starting to heat up

Donovan went 3-for-4 with a double and a hit-by-pitch in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Reds.
This was Donovan's third multi-hit effort in the last five games. He's now gone 17-for-49 (.347) over his last 13 contests, though he has zero home runs and six doubles in that span. The 27-year-old is up to a .245/.326/.382 slash line with four homers, 25 RBI, 26 runs scored, 14 doubles, one triple and no stolen bases over 233 plate appearances this season. Donovan's lack of steals and mediocre sprint speed -- in the 42nd percentile, per Statcast -- makes him an odd fit for the leadoff role, but that's where he's hit for most of the campaign. Masyn Winn has also seen time at leadoff versus left-handed pitchers recently, but Donovan remains atop the order versus righties.

Making his first big-league start since 2022, Pallante was sharp Wednesday, blanking Cincinnati over six innings in the winning effort. The 25-year-old right-hander made nine appearances out of the bullpen in St. Louis this year, struggling to a 6.30 ERA over 10 innings, though he was solid in four starts with Triple-A Memphis, allowing just four earned runs in 16.1 innings. Pallante certainly did enough to warrant another turn in the Cards' rotation -- he'd currently line up for a road matchup with the Astros early next week.

Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar: Exits with apparent side issue

Nootbaar was removed in the bottom of the eighth inning of Wednesday's game against the Reds with an apparent left side injury, John Denton of MLB.com reports. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of base hits before being lifted from the game.
Nootbaar grimaced on a check swing during a plate appearance in the seventh inning. He initially remained in the game after reaching on an infield single before eventually being pulled prior to the bottom of the eighth inning. The Cardinals could have more information on Nootbaar's condition after the game.

Cardinals' Keynan Middleton: Could require surgery

Middleton (forearm) will undergo an MRI on Friday and could require season-ending surgery on his pitching arm, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
Middleton was evaluated by team doctors Tuesday, and the organization seems to have concern that he's dealing with a significant arm injury. If he does ultimately require surgery, his season would end before it began, as Middleton has been shelved since spring training with what's been termed a right forearm strain. The reliever signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Cardinals back in February.

Roby contended with back problems in spring training, but it's unclear if he's dealing with a setback on that front or nursing a new injury. Honeyman missed most of the first month of FCL play, but the 2023 third-round draft pick is finally ready to make his professional debut. As a 22-year-old who played at Boston College prior to being drafted, Honeyman will likely require only a few games in the FCL to regain a rhythm at the plate before the Cardinals assign him to either Single-A Palm Beach or High-A Peoria.

Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Rehab assignment on tap

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Tuesday that a decision on where Gallegos (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment will be made Wednesday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander threw a live bullpen session over the weekend and had another bullpen session Tuesday, clearing him to begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Gallegos landed on the shelf with a pinched nerve in his shoulder in early May, and he should be able to rejoin the Cardinals after a short stay in the minor leagues.
