Zero Two (ゼロツー, Zero Tsū) is one of the main characters in DARLING in the FRANXX series. She is an elite FRANXX pilot who is a member of a race of humans with klaxosaur blood. She is the pistil of the FRANXX Strelizia.
She is voiced in Japanese by Haruka Tomatsu (who also voices Asuna in the Sword Art Online series) and in English by Tia Ballard (who also voices Happy in Fairy Tail, Xiao-Mei in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Garm in Garo: The Animation and Yue from Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest).

Appearance[]
Zero Two has long pastel pink hair with a fringe and a pair of red horns on her head. Her eyes are cyan with pinkish-red eyeliner. Her eyes turn red without her headband. She has a slender and athletic figure; she is the tallest girl among the squad and about the same height as Hiro.
Zero Two's full ensemble is composed of a white military cap with a matching overcoat and boots. She is at often seen wearing her signature red uniform, black tights, and white boots. She also wear a limiter headband on her horns.
Zero Two's original pilot uniform was a tight, dark red bodysuit with a cap of the same color. After she became an official Plantation 13 Parasite, she, like the other Squad 13 Pistils, started wearing a white uniform, with red accents to represent the FRANXX she pilots.
As side effects of aggressively riding Strelizia, Zero Two fangs and horns grow at an alarming rate and her eyes shine red when angered, even when she wears her limiter headband.
Personality[]
Zero Two's personality is dangerous and alluring. She's an elite pilot with the pseudonym "Partner Killer" (パートナー殺し, Pātonā-Goroshi), given the mysterious happenings of her co-pilots dying after a short number of FRANXX outings. She appears to be playful towards Hiro and sometimes shows some sense of humor; even so, she follows her duties. It is implied in Episode 7 that she knows more about the outside world than the other members of Squad 13. Zero Two is very independent, no-nonsense, cold and apathetic. She also very honest, by believing everyone especially the "weaklings" will die in next day at their duty to kill klaxosaurs. At some point, she can be childish and a trickster, especially in Episode 8, where she tricked the other Stamen to bathe in the girls bathroom, and stole their clothes. She also has weird habits, like when she poured honey on her food and licked people to feel their "taste".
However as the story progressed, She is shown to suffer from depression which caused her to become more wild, aloof and extremely difficult to be controlled. She begins to hate her own appearance and she vowed to kill Klaxosaurs, so she can become a human. After Hiro regains his memories about who she is when she almost got him killed, Zero Two regrets her actions and attempts to speak with him. However, due to her being in a very bad mood, she mistakes the Squad 13 members, especially Ichigo, are trying to separate her from Hiro due to her being a monster. After forced to be picked up by APE, Zero Two become more animalistic and uncontrollable. She was also overwhelmed by her sadness due to already her making her fellow Squad 13 members and Hiro after see her "true" nature.
After reconciling with Hiro and Squad 13, Zero Two become more rational, opened, cheerful and shown her companionship to the others and no longer holds her enviousness toward Ichigo.
History[]
After Dr. Werner Frank encountered the leader of Klaxosaurs, 001, he decided to create a clone of her when he took a DNA sample from her hair. Most of the other clones failed but she is the only one to survive, and she received the codename 002 because of her high aptitude and potential. He also created other clones from her DNA, but they didn't inherited her Klaxosaur DNA, which are known as "the 9's".
As a child, 002 spent her time alone in her room, being fed well by her caretaker, who she thought was a stand-in "mother". One day, a caretaker brought her a storybook. The book is about the story of "The Beast and the Prince". She showed her many each pages on the book, and allowed 002 to keep it. The book was her only "pretty thing". The next day, 002 was brought to the Garden, where Dr. Franxx and other adults conducted painful experiments towards her. At her first time arrival at the Garden, a boy named Hiro with codename 016 was fascinated to see her and began being curious about her. However, after he saw the truth that many adults do horrible experiments on her causing her great pain, Hiro decided to free her and ran away from the adults.
After Hiro succeeded to free her, 002 carried him due to him losing consciousness after falling from a tree branch when freeing her. 002 felt weird with the environment outside. When Hiro regained his consciousness, he was surprised to see 002 swallow a mouse and began to bite him when Hiro tried to convince her to release the mouse from her mouth. But she quickly regretted her actions, and Hiro realized she probably understood him. Hiro initially named her as "Oni" based of her codename, but he felt "Zero Two" was a perfect name for her. When she was with Hiro, he taught her everything about the outside world, and introduced her to sweets. In turn, Zero Two wanted Hiro to read her the story of "The Beast and the Prince", and tried very hard to avoid being discovered by the adults. After he finished telling the story, Zero Two became fascinated with the story. However, when they about to continue their runaway, her knee started bleeding and Hiro licked her blood to heal it, explaining that animals lick their wounds to heal them. With him kneeling before her, she confuses his pose with the prince proposing in the book. He asks if it's marriage. Smiling, he says that they will once they escape. He tells her he wants to be with her forever too and become her darling. She begins crying and blushing and hugs him close. They look up and notice that they are under a mistletoe tree. They are suddenly interrupted by a group of adults. Though Hiro tries to protect her, he is hit with the butt of a gun and falls to the ground bleeding.
The adults decide to erase both their memories, but noticed that there are some small fragments that can be difficult to erase from Zero Two. After they are separated, Hiro was brought back to the Garden without any memory of her and Zero Two was determined to reunited with her "darling" by vowing to kill many klaxosaurs, so she can become fully human. Zero Two became a special pistil and worked for APE on the frontlines, and wanted to her to be the ultimate weapon to defeat klaxosaurs. Aside this, she always changed her partner since most of the Stamen partnered with her died after riding with her three times.
Two years before the start of the series, Zero Two was recklessly piloting with Squad 26, resulting in 090's partner dying. Due to her actions and her lack of empathy toward him and his partner, 090 holds grudges and hatred to her.
Etymology[]
- Her codename can be read as "oni": "o" from "0" which can be written as "○" in kanji and ni from 2 (二に, ni). Oni means "demon," a reference to pair of horns on her head.
Trivia[]
- Her theme is "Awakening" by Tachibana Asami.
- Zero Two is said to put a curse on her partners so she can pilot Strelizia but it's unclear how this works.
- Being born as artificial human hybrid, Zero Two mention she can't do a reproduction.
- She refers herself as "Boku" instead of "Watashi" or "Atashi". She uses it because she mimicks how Hiro refers himself.
- Since the series' popularity, Zero Two had become one of the most ongoing anime heroes ever, and is somewhat affiliated with the members of the Shōnen Jump franchise.
- Her appearance is a bit similar to that of Julis Riessfeld from The Asterisk War. Later, it became an inspiration to other fans' favorite waifus. One of the best known examples would be Mori Calliope, member of hololive English -Myth-.
- Despite being a protagonist, both her appearance and personality are possibly based upon Anemone from Eureka Seven.
