All That Matters Is That You Two Are Happy (二人が幸せならそれが一番じゃん, Futari ga Shiawase nara Sore ga Ichiban jan^?) is the twenty-fourth episode of the A Couple of Cuckoos anime series.

Plot[]

The household visits the diner to attend Yohei's birthday party and learn some family secrets surrounding them. The next day after a study session, Erika succumbs to a cold that she caught, and the household, including Hiro, scrambles to help her through it.

Summary[]

At the house, Sachi finds a letter in the post box and learns that it's a birthday invitation. Later inside the house, Erika was excited to learn who the invitation was from; however, both Sachi and Nagi were sad about it. Soon it's revealed that the invitation was from Yohei, who threw a flashy birthday party for himself at the Umino Family Diner. Although Erika is happy about the party, Sachi and Nagi are saddened by the party as it was a platform for Yohei to enjoy the day about himself. Yohei later makes them some Paella; however, Sachi and Nagi respectively want kaarage and katsudon, which Erika believes is inappropriate, but Yohei still prepares it for them. Nagi then reassures Erika that it's like that every year, and the two of them enjoy their meals. As they do, Erika learns that Yohei does this every year, and she then finds a photo album filled with pictures taken every year on Yohei's birthday. One of the pictures stuck out to Erika as it had a picture of young girl standing next to Nagi.

Yohei then brings out his birthday cake, which reveals that he's 36 years old, and serves it to the group. When Sachi asks how old Souichirou is, Erika answers that he's 57 years old. Nagi then notes how suspicious it was that Yohei was 36 and that he was currently 17, which leads to the revelation that he had a "shotgun wedding". Upon this revelation, Yohei downplays it, claiming the two planned to get married in the first place. Sachi then gives a smug remark, about how Nagi's birth led to their parent's shotgun wedding, but Erika corrects her claiming it was her birth that caused it. Sachi then hugs and apologizes to Erika for her smug remark, who relishes how unique her life was, being an unexpected pregnancy and being swapped at birth. Surprised at how positive Erika took the news, Sachi then asks when Erika's birthday was, and she answers April 6th, the same day as Nagi. Appearing before the group, Yohei claims that it was the very reason that on their birthday that the two families arranged both Nagi and Erika's meeting together on their 17th birthday to announce their arranged marriage to one another. Erika and Nagi then realize their first encounter that day was a mere coincidence.

Namie enters the scene and notes that she'd sincerely be his mother once Erika and Nagi marry. However, Yohei and her both note how they were once worried about the marriage, but are happy that they came to visit them that day and want them to be happy overall. Derailing from the auspicious moment they were having, Namie then mentions how her parents initially disapproved of Yohei and her marriage together. Not wanting to waste any more time, Namie proclaims they need to set up shop for the day, and a frantic Yohei tries to play one last song before they do. Riding the bus home, Nagi and Erika talk about what was learned at the diner as Sachi rests on Erika's shoulder.

Eventually, Shion contacts a sleepy Nagi. Shion informs him that after scrolling through Erika's Instu account, he found out that Erika has been hanging out with Hiro every day for study sessions with Sachi and that they should get in on the action. However, Nagi refuses to continue the conversation and hangs up on Shion. Afterward, Hiro announces the study group's prep-test scoring; Nagi gets all questions correct, Erika gets all questions incorrect, and Sachi ran out of time. In the end, Hiro wins because she completed the test the fastest. Right, when Hiro suggests they take a snack break, Erika faints, and it's later learned that she contracted a cold. Sachi and Hiro tend to Erika's needs in her room, and soo Nagi, with some cold medicine, walks in while Erika gets undressed. Immediately, Nagi is kicked out of the room, and he overhears Erika apologizing to the girls about how she was troubling them. Wanting to help Erika out, Hiro and Sachi volunteer to nurse her back to health, and Hiro leaves to get some supplies from her home to help Erika while Sachi goes shopping. Left home alone in the house, Nagi contemplates what to do with his time.

Afterward, Hiro returns and offers Erika some bottled sake believing its home remedy properties would help Erika with her cold. Because of Hiro's frantic insistence, Erika agrees. However, before she can, Sachi enters the scene with leeks attached to her head and proclaims they'll head to the sauna bath to sweat her illness away. Wanting to accept both of their medicinal home remedies, Erika tries to get out of bed, but faints again.

By dusk, Hiro and Sachi sit on the couch in the living room area as Nagi studies by the table and lament how they couldn't help Erika with her cold. Overhearing this, Nagi prepares Erika a meal and delivers it to Erika in her room. A heart-to-heart between them starts concerning their relationship and how Erika pushed herself so hard with her studies made her sick. To that point, Erika denies it and starts eating the meal Nagi prepared for her. After she finishes it, Erika asks how Nagi knows her better than herself, and Nagi promptly answers that they're engaged, so it's a natural thing. Unbeknownst to the two, their conversation was eavesdropped by Hiro and Sachi, who thought they were now "truly engaged".

That night, Hiro is seen off by Nagi and Erika and is glad that Erika's fever managed to break. Checking the mailbox, they find another letter by Yohei containing a copy of the group photo they took, and later Erika pinned it to their photo board. They then talk about the photos pinned to the board, and Erika wonders if she'll ever have a family like that.

Meanwhile, Sachi enjoys some dim sum with Souichirou, informing him of the current situation between Erika and Nagi. Although Sachi suspects that Souichirou would be upset by their relationship, in fact, he is content with it and will continue watching from afar as their relationship unfolds.

Back at the home, Nagi and Erika get into an argument over what the other did that they disapproved of. Ultimately, they both proclaim their frustration over being engaged with the other.
